Random Thoughts

This is a place for me to post some of the things that I see in my travels, and hopefully laugh in the process.

More signs that I’m getting old

We are swamped at work.  To encourage us to work overtime, they are actually paying us for the overtime that we work, which is a switch from where we wouldn’t get overtime in the office till we reached 50 hours.  So I’ve been coming in at 6a.m. so I can leave at 4:30p.m. and get home at a decent time and get some dinner before heading back out to my youngest son’s wrestling practice on Monday and Wednesdays.

When I drive into work, I usually listen to a local listener supported radio station that plays interesting music from all over the world.  Some of it’s cool, some of it just doesn’t make sense.  The dude that has the first shift in the morning is Hispanic.  He’s had the time slot for a long time, years in fact.  The station is very proud of him for coming in so early for all these years and filling the time slot.  Unfortunately for me, he speaks Spanish through his entire time slot and plays a lot of music you’d hear in a Mexican Restaurant.  I can handle it for about 2 songs, but after that I lose interest.

I’ve tried listening to other stations in the area, but I just haven’t found a station that’s:

  • Not a syndicated joke machine that plays no music (Bob and Tom is just not my thing).
  • Not a touchy feely station that plays light rock and the DJ is the type that could be a John Tesh wanna-be.
  • Not a classic rock station that’s been playing the same music that my parents and/or I grew up on.
  • Not a rock station where the band’s lead singer screams (painfully) into the microphone.
  • Not a hip-hop station where the common denominator in the talent and lyrics seems to center around sex.
  • Not another sports radio station.
  • Not a Christian radio station (I’m just not into the Lord-uh).

Apparently if you are not interested in these items in the morning, you are out of luck.  Short of putting on headphones and using my MP3 player on my phone (illegal here in Michigan), I’ve been channel flipping in the morning bouncing around the dial until I can find a station that actually plays music, and has songs I can tolerate during the ride in.  Then I stopped on one station and I’ve been stuck there for several days now.

When I grew up, one of the local radio stations I listened to used to have Paul Harvey on once in a while.  Paul has been telling interesting stories for years now.  Sometimes I found them funny.  Sometimes they were interesting.  Sometimes they were just plain corny.

It must have made an impression on me in my youth, either that or I’m just rapidly approaching the “halfway to dead” age.  The station I’ve been listening to lately has been a station that’s broadcasting NPR.

Maybe I should look into buying a Buick next.
